Channel Tres fuses west coast rap with Detroit house on new EP ‘Black Moses’.
The voice of Channel Tres is effortlessly deep, quite like that of Barry White. His reimagined Detroit house is fused with a west coast rap attitude from growing up in Compton, a city in southern Los Angeles. Although considered a small city, it has a rich and vibrant history of producing top-tier artists, with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E hailing from Compton.
The combination of these elements has allowed Channel Tres to produce a seductive, euphoric, jazz-inspired take on dance music. ‘Black Moses’, his new EP, is five tracks in length and blends predominately hip hop and house. The second track of the EP, ‘Brilliant ‘Nigga’, begins as a classic deep house track, with ethereal synth parts that expand and retract, paired with a summery Latin flute. The four to the floor bass drum and bongos add an unbolted groove, whilst he states “I’m a brilliant nigga”, projected with ease and grit.
There’s plenty of space within the track for individual elements to be appreciated. The repetitive bass line drives the song forward, but also drops out to allow the song to mellow out, and pick up again with various percussive elements. These include tambourine, bongos and shaker. The varied instrumentation contributes to the kinetic energy and passion of the track. Meanwhile, Tres’ vocal style is nonchalant, as he advises, “They tried to put shackles on you, girl just be yourself, might as well pay for it ’cause you know they need some help”.
‘Brilliant Nigga’ is an empowered statement of inspiring self confidence.
