Sat in an Amsterdam café at the start of February this year penning plans for a solo venture under his own name, Ian had no clue what surprises 2020 would bring. A global pandemic hit, but that would not stop the project coming to fruition. The atmospheric electronic textures and biting drum sound that introduces new single Forget Her (and that groove!) is certainly a signal of intent. Until now Ian Charles Carter’s 2020 releases have arrived in the form of firecracker New Teeth and the atmospheric Gold Blood, the London-based artist and head honcho of The New Town Tudors label proves he’s got multiple strings to his artistic bow on new tune Forget Her.
Taking inspiration from the infectious beat-driven soundscapes and production of Frank Ocean – the production courtesy of friend and Dutch producer Evenbeing – while still clinging onto his indie roots, Ian Charles Carter continues to push the boundaries of expectation and grow as an artist. Harnessing the sonic palette of James Blake in the track’s warped electronics and left-field arrangement, Forget Her may mark a shift in sound but holds dear an oddball-pop sentiment present in the projects DNA.
What is apparent over Ian Charles Carter’s first three releases is his ability to shift shape and sound, whilst maintaining a stomach-knotting vocal delivery and knack for creating subtle, slow-burning hooks. Remixes come from instrumental grime outfit 1000 Doors’ Boardgame James and Rimplton who explore the single through fresh eyes and push it into a new realm.
