We caught up with the boys to talk being angry, making a racket and what this year has in store for Serene.
What do you think of when you picture ‘serenity’? Blue skies, sandy beaches, a light and playful breeze caressing your face as you sip another expertly crafted mojito? Well for these four snotty lads this is clearly not the case.
London quartet Serene are clearly a band who find serenity in chaos. Displaying all the nihilistic posturing and primitive riffs of Pissed Jeans but with a rhythm section aping the demonic bluesy swagger of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Serene aren’t here simply to entertain you, they’re here to aurally assault you. Their brand of simplistic yet intense punk rock hits so hard you can practically smell the sweat on their clothes, stale beer on their breath and see the blood splattered across their instruments.

What attracted you to the raw and gritty side of punk?
Jake – “I’m not sure what attracted me to it but its something that I began I listening to more and more over time.”
This brand of sweat-inducing and bludgeoning punk continues to enjoy huge popularity through such bands as Idles, Metz and Pissed Jeans. Do you think think this style of music is a reaction to/reflexion of the state of the world?
Jake – “I would say so, the emotion that seems to be portrayed in a lot of songs by the mentioned artists is anger, resentment and disappointment. Its something that everyone can relate to, given the world we currently live in.”
Tell us about the dark concept behind the video for ‘With You’
Jake – “The video is open to interpretation, we don’t like to give away too much… However, the lyrics tie in with the video.”
What can we expect from a Serene live show?
Ricky – “A lot of raw energy and emotion, an adrenaline fuelled set.”
On a scale of Good Charlotte to GG Allin, just how punk are Serene?
Jake – “You’ll have to watch us and make your own mind up.”
What does 2018 have in store for you?
Carl – “We have shows lined up for the rest of the year and are releasing our second single in June.”
“We’re also heading back into the studio to record more tracks this summer.”
