What do we know about Child Star? The London duo capture the feeling that its OK to be “pathetically in love”, they exist in a purist pop world. Their debut release, a double A-side single in ‘Moon Candy’ and ‘Slide’, arrived this month and served as a reminder that pop music can truly be exciting.
Songwriter Ondrej Novotny’s musical journey was primarily influenced by 90’s pop whilst growing up in Brno, Czech Republic. His taste stretching from the experimental rock of John Frusciante to the noisier My Bloody Valentine. Vocalist Julia Moreau’s presence in Child Star has transformed the project, taking influence from the defiant folk of Regina Spektor and a youthful diet of Avril Lavigne, lifting their niche dream pop and shoegaze demos to a more complex alternative pop sound.
‘Slide’ opens with squidgy synths and a floating dream pop landscape, bass grooves strut and build into a euphoric chorus, whereby ‘Moon Candy’ feels more direct and traditionally pop focused. Luscious guitar paves the way for Julia Moreau’s smart lyrical delivery and hook-laden melodies, ‘Moon Candy’ lyrically tackles both huge world issues and the everyday.
After all, Child Star aim to, “.. bring joy to the fractured world of 2020, and remind us to enjoy life’s everyday just that little bit more.” Accomplished.
