Oxford lot Self Help deliver a raucous, uncompromising and highly energetic new EP.
Self Help have released a hard-hitting, high-octane six track EP named Organic Noise Kitchen. Following their December headline show at Oxford’s The Bullingdon alongside Lacuna Common, the four-piece have unveiled new material and look set to tear up 2019.
Ferocious stabs of guitar and crashing drums opens up 1,000,000 MPH, the boisterous punk-inspired opening track sets the scene for Self Help‘s whirlwind brand of rock & roll. Relentless and unyielding we’re quickly thrown headfirst into Get on with it, the track displaying a strong pop sensibility amidst the chaos of full throttle guitars and a bassline that somehow saves the track from sonic implosion.
Just when you think they’ve let you off the hook, enter The Razz. The track in question feels somewhat of a centrepiece for the record, Britpop vibes aplenty, The Razz may be the catchiest slice of alternative rock you’ll hear all year.
Stories of love and youthful wanderings burst out from within Something More and Gooey, the tunes are short, sharp and as hooky as hell. It’s lightning-paced ramshackle rock stuffed into a pop nutshell, each of the two tracks offer up something different and astonishingly both finish before the 3 minute mark.
Enough Is Enough finishes the EP on a fiery note, part epic slow burner, part kaleidoscopic alt-rock masterpiece. Building instrumentation rises and falls in waves of fuzz, guitar solos run riot and it’s all over in a final mind-altering breakdown.
