An escapist rejection of developments and gentrification, the new single shouts out love and local business.

Moon Balloon have long been a favourite indie rock band among a well-stocked London scene. Their latest single ‘Larry’s’ is something of an escapist celebration of making music, living free and eating sandwiches in the face of London’s ongoing gentrification. Something of a supergroup, the song is sung by Rhys Timson accompanied by Ewan Wilkie (aka Ewe and Friends) on bass, Luce Rushton on drums and Anna Bailey on keys, with production coming from Joseph Futak.

‘Larry’s’ shouts out a favourite sandwich bar and kicks off with a riff in the same neighbourhood as Courtney Barnett’s ‘Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party.’ As the lyrics set in, descriptive lyrics paint a rich picture of modern London, shouting out the titular sandwich shop and promoting dancing and loving in spite of the “rich getting richer.” Neil Young guitars trade off with more playful synth riffs in a swirling instrumental that offers a freewheeling antidote to the “developers dream” lamented through the song. The chorus comes back, its tone liberated even as it echoes the London grind mentality (“moving fast never slow”), its sentiment ultimately anchored by the “ooh ooh oohs” that close the track out.
