2023 by its Artists #7: Flip Top Head.

The recent Blitzcat signees tell all as they look back on a great year for the band.

A whirlwind roundup of the year from a band that makes whirlwind music, here is what the year’s looked like for Flip Top Head. Having released two tremendous singles, both of which blew us away, as well as taking the live scene by storm with their unwieldy brilliant stage setup, we were keen to check in with them ahead of whatever they go haring into next year.

2023 for Flip Top Head.

2023 has absolutely been Flip Top Head’s year of flourishing. In January, we signed to Blitzcat Records and pranced around Devils Dyke wearing wedding dresses in minus degrees. In February, we released our debut single ‘Seventh Bell Number’ and went on our first tour. In March, we spent some time recording at Abbey Road Studios (!!) and Brighton Electric with our good friend Bobby. In April we were forced to play our first and most definitely last gig missing a member. Never again. In May, we frolicked around the city for The Great Escape. In June, we were invited to the BBC Introducing live lounge with Melita Dennett. In July, we took some time to prepare for our second single of the year. In August, we posed as ABBA for a tribute night and killed it to an almost embarrassing extent. In September, we released and toured our second single ‘Alfred Street’. In October, we played a spooky So Young showcase on Halloween. In November, we went on a mini tour and began recording with the wonderful Theo Verney. In December, we continue recording and playing some wholesome local shows – including Mum Fest at Green Door Store, with many pals.

Musical Career Highlight.

Playing an ABBA cover set at the Green Door Store – it was fucking wild! Those tunes are so well written, so it was a nice challenge adapting them to fit us as an eight-piece band for the night, nice ear training and arrangement practice as we’d never done a cover before as a band. And the crowd was bloody nuts – if only they were like that for our own tunes hey!

Favourite live show that you’ve played.

Brighten The Corners, Ipswich. Contrary to popular belief, but Ipswich is actually the rock ’n’ roll capital of the UK. We had the pleasure of playing to a full room at St Stephen’s Church and it was an absolute delight. The setting married our sound perfectly and it was a beautifully attentive audience- not a single bit of chatter during our quiet moments. It was one of those shows where everyone is on the ball and completely in the zone – we walked off stage thinking we were the absolute bollocks, always a good feeling. Special mention to the only guy we know who wears sandals all year round, the legend that is Jamie Robertson as well as the whole BTC crew for taking such good care of us and giving us such fantastic opportunities.

“Idk who u are but my boyfriend has called me in near tears claiming you are the best band he has ever seen in his entire life. And now he won’t stop talking about flip flop top head for the rest of the night so thank you for this.”
