On ‘Kinshasa Shuffle’, new South London group Human Resources introduce us to their captivating fusion of post-punk eccentricities with a wistful yearning for the dance hits of yesteryear. Their unique sound encapsulates a sense of misfit nostalgia, as vocalist Harry Handford’s enigmatic musings transport us into the realm of an imaginary dancer, in shades of the iconic film ‘Top Gun.’ This electrifying track serves as a tantalizing preview of their highly anticipated debut EP ‘Malperfect’, which hits the shelves this August.

The song commences with an atmospheric and introspective opening, where gentle horns subtly emerge amidst the musical tapestry. Eventually, this gives way to the radiant allure of guitars and drums, which puncture the dancefloor smoke machine mist. An infectious rhythm and pulsating beat propel the track, keeping the energy levels high throughout. A narrative unfolds, centring on a woman’s dance moves, the title ‘Kinshasa Shuffle’ paying homage to the Congolese city. The song’s stripped-down simplicity and catchy hooks make for an irresistible earworm that lingers long after the music ends.

Human Resources shed light on their latest creation, stating, “In the spirit of timeless dance tunes like ‘The Hokey-Cokey’ and ‘Cha Cha Slide,’ we present our unique take on form, complete with straightforward instructions and an infectious rhythm for you to groove to in the comfort of your own home!”

The band identify themselves on LinkedIn as a “South London startup focused on performance-driven management solutions”. This is something of an introduction to the way they cleverly utilise the sterile language of suits to satirize and mock the encroachment of cubicle culture and the rat race into everyday existence and social connections. Like underground favourites The Cool Greenhouse, the band masterfully juxtapose hot takes about the absurdity of the world around us with unfiltered post-punk urgency, constructing a captivating lyrical landscape which exudes an enlightened ironic perspective.

Comprised of Matt Baker on guitar, Harry Handford on vocals, guitar, and synth, Colin Olive on drums, and Leo Dutton on bass, Human Resources proudly showcases their distinctive musical prowess and their ability to craft an immersive sonic experience. Through ‘Kinshasa Shuffle,’ they invite listeners on a thrilling journey that challenges societal norms while delivering an unadulterated dose of post-punk energy.

Human Resources launch new EP ‘Malperfect’ on 17th August at The George Tavern. Tickets here.
