Modema, the Manchester-based synth specialist, has captivated audiences with her mesmerizing performances alongside The Orielles in recent years. Today, she unveils her much-anticipated debut solo single, “Running Back.” This remarkable track showcases her ability to seamlessly traverse the realms of club textures and experimental pop, firmly establishing her alongside esteemed pop experimenters such as ML Buch, Jenny Hval, and Caroline Polachek.

Released under the Corridor Of Dreams label, “Running Back” is a testament to Modema’s talent as a solo artist. Emily Z, the Manchester-based multi-instrumentalist and producer behind the moniker, combines her vocal abstractions and textured synthesizers with a modern pop sensibility. Drawing inspiration from musical luminaries like Björk and Caroline Polachek, Modema effortlessly transitions between analogue and digital production techniques, deftly interweaving chopped-up samples and synthesized percussion to craft intricate rhythmic interplay.

Having honed her craft while working at Manchester’s renowned Piccadilly Records, Modema has absorbed a rich tapestry of electronic music influences, including hyperpop, ambient, and electronica. These diverse sounds have significantly contributed to the development of her complex futuristic sonic palette.

‘Running Back’, self-produced in collaboration with Joel Anthony Patchett (known for his work with The Orielles, King Krule, and Jane Weaver), is a sonic patchwork woven from fragments of vocals, ethereal synth lines, and scattered drum patterns. The basslines on this track are a revelation, oscillating between gentle melodies and pulsating rhythms to create a dynamic and captivating listening experience. It seamlessly bridges the gap between headphones-on introspection and dancefloor euphoria.

Through her music and soundscapes, Modema delves into the enigmatic realms of corporeality and explores the intangible nature of human connection. “Running Back” invites listeners on a thought-provoking journey, where emotive melodies and experimental textures intertwine to create an immersive sonic experience. It is an outstanding debut, testament to her artistry and marks the emergence of a talent destined for great heights.
